The situation has not gotten any better even now. The last year, there was a 5% decrease in in-store sales, and net income losses were reported at a whopping $273 million for all four clothing brands.

As a result of all this, the company has planned to cut down $300 million in costs by letting go of the management positions and by reducing the number of off-line stores they have and shifting their focus to online sales now.

The sad part is Gap and Banana Republic is not the only company to do this; many other retail giants, including, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Mornings, etc., are all planning to close a majority of their stores.

In October 2020, Gap announced that they will be closing 350 of Gap and Banana Republic stores in North America to have a healthier and smaller fleet of stores. 

This would leave only 870 stores to remain open compared to 1,216 stores in 2019.

The chief financial officer for Gap Inc, Katrina O’Connell, said that this “fleet transformation” stratergy is necessary and it will help them “adapt to the current market conditions and meet the increase in online demand.”

Now in 2023, they are all set to close 50-55 Gap and Banana Republic Stores in North America.
